Discovery of a mechanism to deal with “kinks” in DNA strands –Smc5/6 complex is a molecular motor that recognizes positively supercoiled DNA–

◆ We found that torsional stress in DNA strands downstream of the gene transcription machinery (RNA polymerase II) are recognized by the Smc5/6 complex, a DNA pump.
◆ We proposed a model in which DNA regions with accumulated torsional stress are organized into a loop-like structure in the cell nucleus.
◆ This work is expected to contribute to the understanding of the mechanism that cells have to prevent cancer development and aging (that is, genome maintenance mechanism).
