International Collaboration

It has been noted that there has been a drop in international presence (falling rankings and fewer papers), fewer young researchers going abroad, and a drop in information dissemination from academic circles in Japan.

In order to continue conducting world-class research, it is necessary to create an environment in which a diverse range of domestic and international researchers and students can participate and work together in friendly competition. We prioritize partnerships and interdisciplinary exchanges with other overseas institutions.

The University of Tokyo and the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have signed an agreement to establish “The University of Tokyo – Karolinska Institutet LINK for Innovative Networks and Knowledge (UTokyo-KI LINK)”, which aims to establish a genuine co-creative partnership that cannot be achieved by holding temporary seminars and symposiums alone.

These efforts have led to the creation of a sustainable system for co-creation, a center, encouraging further substantial cooperation among young researchers and PIs.

In creating the Center as a venue for co-creation, there are three resident researchers at Karolinska Institutet on loan from IQB, and a next-generation sequencer has been installed to expand the IQB Central Laboratory overseas. Additionally, full-time researchers who are foreign nationals are also employed by IQB, further promoting internationalization.

International Collaboration with IFOM

Despite its small size, IFOM is an Italian research institute specializing in cancer and chromosome research, with a strong emphasis on basic research, but it also conducts research covering drug discovery and clinical studies. Its researchers and students are becoming increasingly internationalized, and its emphasis is on international collaboration, concentrating on developing jointly operated laboratories, especially in Asia. The IQB and IFOM share many of the same research fields. We are promoting exchanges to boost cancer therapy and chromosome research through technical collaboration and exchanges, promoting international joint research and student exchanges through bilateral dispatches of researchers, and establishing a collaborative IFOM-IQB laboratory.
